I would like to “get my hands dirty” on the front lines of this movement. In all truth, I haven’t always been such a strong proponent of locally grown and sustainable agriculture. Sure, I appreciated fresh and whole foods, but my knowledge and relationship with food has certainly matured with the years. When I first started, I didn’t realize the importance of a locally grown tomato vs. one grown in California and salt and pepper were the only spices in my kitchen. But I’ve since become an avid home gardener,enthusiastic local foods supporter and a daring home cook. I was fortunate to have put my sustainable food philosophies to work as an owner of Café Estelle in Philadelphia. The Café bought locally as much as possible, were members of the Independents Coffee Cooperative and supported nose-to-tail eating. Since leaving the Café, I’ve assisted in the opening of a successful tap room, whose kitchen concentrated on seasonally fresh foods, and picked up serving and bartending shifts where needed. The GIS, Google Earth, CAD, and Microsoft Excel knowledge I have acquired is beneficial in efficiently gathering and implementing data. For projects, the system I execute in Excel to mock up information and equations for developers is clear, informative, and direct. Projecting system size via property research helps a developer estimate where to appropriately focus and being able to independently conceive solution oriented material is valuable. Also, resourcefully providing a system for analysis that works demonstrates my organizational and solution-oriented tactics, and is helpful in future tasks that are presented to me. Lastly, approaching projects by balancing investigation methodically and creatively is a skill. As a team player, aside from supporting projects, sharing knowledge is important to me.
